Posthumous Honor

After about 7 years of covering military funerals and posthumous award ceremonies, I have to say, they are still very painful to watch. They are also a reminder that we are still at war and that real people are getting killed(as opposed to troops). Kathleen McGlothlin’s,8, uncle, 2nd Lt. Donald McGlothlin, was posthumously awarded a Silver star from the Marine Corps for bravery during a firefight where 5 marines died and dozens od insurgents in Iraq. As I was watching her through-out the ceremony, you could tell she was trying so hard to keep it together and not cry. Her lips were fluttering, and her eyes were focused on something, maybe a tree or cloud. Then, the Colonel started telling the story of Lt. McGlothlin’s bravery during battle, and how he had saved numerous Marine’s lives before dying from an insurgent’s sniper. All the sudden, she couldn’t hold back any longer and just burst out in tears. What a tear jerker!! It was such an honest moment from an innocent child.
